Theraplaying (A Division of Sharp & Flat) Advances Music-Based Therapy for Parkinson's
Theraplaying, the movement disorder division of Sharp & Flat, is a patented, personalized music therapy program designed to address the complex motor, cognitive, and emotional symptoms experienced by people with Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders, conditions affecting an estimated 42 million Americans. Drawing on research showing that music can support motor control, mood, and neurological function, the program combines an individualized therapeutic protocol with specialized technology, including a forearm-stabilizing guitar device and a wearable motion-tracking system that guides movement and monitors patient progress. Early published case studies from our research, conducted in collaboration with academic and clinical partners, demonstrate smoother, more controlled wrist-elbow motion and reduced tremor-related variability, supporting the potential of music-based interventions as adjuncts to conventional rehabilitation. With multiple international patents, peer-reviewed research, and partnerships across leading clinical and research institutions, Theraplaying represents an emerging model of neurorehabilitation and a novel therapeutic approach within occupational therapy, and the therapy system is being advanced as a billable medical device. The company is currently raising a pre-seed round ahead of the launch of its clinical practice in early April.
Recent milestones reflect growing clinical and industry recognition. A research abstract was selected for publication and presentation at the International Movement Disorder Society Congress in October 2025, and studies were published in Music and Medicine and the Journal of Music, Technology, and Education in January 2026. The company was also invited to the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference, where it was selected to present at the Biotech Showcase. Upcoming engagements include SXSW in March, the LSI Convention, and participation in the World Parkinson’s Congress in May 2026, where the team will both attend and present. A national feature on ABC News is also in development.
