Mackinac Policy Conference Reinforces Importance of Life Sciences Engagement

State Advocacy,

The 2026 Mackinac Policy Conference (hosted by the Detroit Regional Chamber) once again provided an invaluable opportunity to elevate the priorities of Michigan's life sciences community and engage directly with policymakers, business leaders, and economic development stakeholders who are helping shape the state's future.

As Michigan's premier public policy and leadership gathering, the conference convenes elected officials, administration leaders, industry executives, academic institutions, entrepreneurs, and nonprofit organizations to discuss the issues most critical to Michigan's economic growth and competitiveness. For the life sciences sector, it serves as a unique platform to ensure that innovation, healthcare, biotechnology, medical technology, and pharmaceutical development remain part of the broader economic development conversation.

Throughout the conference, MichBio participated in nearly 20 scheduled meetings with members of the Michigan Legislature and administration officials. Equally important were the many informal conversations that occurred during networking events (like the one hosted by MichBio members Genentech, Gilead and BMS, along with Abbvie) and impromptu encounters throughout the conference. These unplanned interactions often are the best opportunities to build relationships, share perspectives, and identify areas for future collaboration.

The discussions focused on a range of issues that are central to the continued growth and success of Michigan's life sciences ecosystem, including:

  • Strengthening Michigan's research and innovation infrastructure;

  • Expanding access to capital for emerging life sciences companies;

  • Supporting commercialization and technology transfer activities;

  • Building and retaining a highly skilled life sciences workforce;

  • Enhancing Michigan's competitiveness in attracting and growing life sciences businesses;

  • Educating on the perils of invoking price controls on pharmaceuticals

One encouraging theme that emerged from many conversations was the growing recognition among policymakers and economic development leaders that life sciences represent a significant economic opportunity for Michigan. The sector not only drives high-wage job creation and investment but also contributes to improved health outcomes, advances in patient care, and solutions to some of society's most pressing healthcare challenges.

The conference also reinforced the importance of ongoing advocacy and engagement. Meaningful policy outcomes rarely result from a single meeting or event. Rather, they are built through sustained dialogue, trusted relationships, and a consistent effort to educate decision-makers about the needs and opportunities within the life sciences sector. Events such as the Mackinac Policy Conference provide an important venue for initiating and strengthening those relationships.

As discussions continue around Michigan's economic development strategies, innovation priorities, and workforce initiatives, MichBio will remain actively engaged in advocating for policies and investments that strengthen the state's life sciences ecosystem and support the entrepreneurs, researchers, companies, healthcare organizations, and institutions that drive innovation across Michigan.

We appreciate the many legislators, state officials, candidates for elected office, and partners who took the time to meet with us during the conference. Their willingness to engage in thoughtful conversations about the future of Michigan's life sciences industry reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that Michigan remains a leader in innovation, discovery, and economic growth.

The momentum generated at Mackinac provides a strong foundation for continued collaboration in the months ahead, and MichBio looks forward to advancing these conversations as we work together to strengthen Michigan's life sciences future.
