Cell & Molecular Scientist

About Genemarkers

Genemarkers is a CLIA-certified and CAP-accredited contract research laboratory based in Kalamazoo, Michigan. We partner with biopharmaceutical, dermatology, inflammatory disease, consumer product, and translational research organizations to generate high-quality, genomic and proteomic data that supports meaningful scientific and product decisions.

Our work spans gene expression analysis, next-generation sequencing, advanced in vitro and ex vivo models, molecular and protein-based assays, and customized assay development. As a growing, specialized laboratory, we combine scientific expertise with a highly collaborative, client-focused approach.

At Genemarkers, scientists have the opportunity to do more than execute protocols. Our team contributes to study design, troubleshooting, assay-development, data interpretation, and the continued expansion of our scientific capabilities.

The Opportunity

In this role, you’ll combine hands-on laboratory work with scientific problem-solving, study execution, data interpretation, and client collaboration. You’ll work across cell and tissue culture, molecular biology, protein-based assays, and tissue-based applications while contributing to assay development and new scientific capabilities.

You’ll be expected to understand the scientific objectives behind each study, anticipate and troubleshoot challenges, communicate effectively with the team and clients, and take ownership of delivering high-quality results. This is an opportunity to have a meaningful voice in how studies are executed and how Genemarkers continues to expand its capabilities.

This position involves working independently while collaborating closely with scientists, laboratory leadership, Client Services, and business development. Strong hands-on cell and tissue culture experience is essential. Experience with advanced culture systems, primary cells, ex vivo models, and/or skin biology is highly valued.

Occasional; evening or weekend work may be required to support time-sensitive study activities or critical study timelines.

Responsibilities*

Technical/Laboratory

  • Perform hands-on cell and tissue culture, including primary and/or advanced culture systems as applicable to study requirements.
  • Perform protein-based assays including ELISA and Meso Scale Discovery (MSD) assays.
  • Conduct cytotoxicity and other functional cellular assays.
  • Perform RNA and DNA isolation, gene expression workflows, and qPCR assays
  • Perform automated immunohistochemistry and related tissue-based applications.
  • Analyze experimental data, identify trends or unexpected findings, and contribute to scientific interpretation.
  • Prepare clear, accurate, scientifically sound study reports and supporting documentation.
  • Recognize, document, troubleshoot, and investigate experimental deviations and contribute to root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Ensure work is performed in accordance with applicable SOPs, quality requirements, and study protocols.

Study Ownership & Client Collaboration

  • Take ownership of assigned studies from planning and execution through data analysis and final reporting.
  • Coordinate laboratory activities to meet study timelines and sponsor expectations.
  • Provide scientific input during study planning and proposal development.
  • Serve as a technical resource for clients by helping explain results, address scientific questions, and identify appropriate next steps.
  • Communicate study status, challenges, and opportunities proactively to laboratory leadership and project stakeholders.
  • Partner with Client Services, business development, and laboratory personnel to ensure a positive sponsor experience.

Innovation & Scientific Growth

  • Research primary literature and emerging technologies to identify opportunities for new services and improved methodologies.
  • Develop, optimize, troubleshoot, and validate new assays and laboratory methods.
  • Conduct internal R&D studies to expand Genemarkers’ scientific capabilities.
  • Draft and revise SOPs, protocols, and other technical documentation.
  • Evaluate new technologies and instrumentation and provide recommendations to laboratory leadership.
  • Contribute to scientific presentations, publications, posters, and conference materials.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, or related field with relevant industry or laboratory experience; Master’s or PhD degree preferred.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on experience in cell culture and molecular biology techniques, including nucleic acid isolation and qPCR.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot experimental challenges and work independently.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail and data quality.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google applications

Preferred
  • Experience with primary cell culture, advanced culture systems, 3D models, or ex vivo tissue models.
  • Experience with skin or hair biology or dermatology-related research.
  • Experience with ELISA, Meso Scale Discovery (MSD), cytotoxicity assays, or other protein/cellular assays.
  • Experience with immunohistochemistry and tissue-based assays.
  • Experience with NGS or other genomic technologies.
  • Experience developing, optimizing, or validating laboratory assays.
  • Experience preparing scientific reports, presentations, publications, or conference materials.
  • Experience working in a regulated laboratory environment.
