National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Share |
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the nation's premier research agency for the study of human health conditions, diagnostics and treatments. Funding of the NIH has been erratic over the last decade and has not kept pace with the cost of biomedical research inflation. The results have been a dramatic reduction in the rate of meritorious research proposals and a concomitant drop in the training of future professional bioscience talent.

MichBio strongly encourages Congress to protect NIH and supports an agency budget of $32 billion. Also, it opposes any further cuts to its budget, and indeed, restore funding to pre-sequester levels. Additionally, MichBio recommends additional funding for translational research (i.e., National Center for Accelerating Translational Sciences) and accelerating development of treatments (i.e., Cures Accelerating Network) and technology commercialization (i.e., SBIR/STTR)..
Sufficient investment in NIH will help drive the U.S. biomedical innovation pipeline and lead ultimately to the development of many novel therapies and treatments.
