Core Bio-Industry Sectors
Share |
The Michigan biosciences industry employs approximately 40,000 across 1,595 individual business establishments (based on NAICS codes). Its largest major subsector is bioscience-related product distribution with more than 11,000 jobs in 2010 and growth of 13 percent overall since 2001, well above the national growth rate. Two other sub-sectors - medical devices and equipment, as well as agricultural feedstock and chemicals - have each added jobs in Michigan in recent years despite employment declines at the national level. Indeed, Michigan's medical device community is considered to rank in the top ten nationally. The state's pharmaceutical and biotech sector is built on Michigan's rich legacy as the home to the nation's first two pharmaceutical companies.
