Wayne State University’s NIH-funded BEST Program to Sponsor Careers Bootcamp on The Business of Science, May 22-23, WSU School of Medicine Campus

Wayne State University’s NIH-funded BEST Program (Broadening Experiences in Scientific Training) is excited to announce that it will be sponsoring a careers bootcamp on The Business of Science, to be conducted by the national science professional development firm SciPhD on May 22-23, 2017.  This rigorous, hands-on workshop is open to doctoral trainees and postdoctoral scientists committed to making successful transitions to positions in business and industry after completing their doctorate or research training.  SciPhD has held similar career workshops at major research universities nationwide, including Rutgers, the University of Michigan, the University of Chicago, Harvard University, and Stanford.

The BEST Program is designed to help doctoral trainees learn about the multiple career pathways open to them in addition to academic positions in university research settings.  According to the grant’s co-principal investigator, Dean of the Wayne State Graduate School Dr. Ambika Mathur, “Our goal is to help prepare doctoral trainees to meet the needs of the 21st century economy in a dynamic and evolving job market.”

In the program, students and postdocs can participate in a professional development curriculum that focuses on how their scientific training, problem-solving skills and analytical aptitude can help them achieve success in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries, patent and intellectual property law, state and federal government, and science communication. The SciPhD careers bootcamp is one of several special events sponsored by BEST that focuses specifically on how those with advanced science training can identify and promote the skills they possess that are necessary for professional practice in commercial industry settings.

The cost of attending the two-day bootcamp is $35 (nonrefundable) and includes breakfast and lunch on both days, plus a personalized portfolio of job-hunting resources for each participant.  Deadline for registration is Friday, May 5; walk-in registration will not be permitted.
