The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) added the cities of Charlotte, Lapeer and Sault Ste. Marie to its Selected level of the Michigan Main Street program last week.

The announcement, made by Gov. Rick Snyder, will see the three communities gain five years of technical assistance from the MEDC in the hopes of revitalizing and expanding. Strategies discussed will contain
plans to attract new residents while fueling economic growth and job creation.

“I’m excited to see how these three communities will grow within the next five years,” Snyder said. “With the support of the Main Street program and the MEDC, I believe we can positively transform the downtowns in some smaller communities to ensure their place on Michigan’s path toward our future.”

The Michigan Main Street program was created in 2003 and currently includes 18 other communities across the state at the same level of assistance, and 35 participating across all levels of the program’s services. Differences between service levels is based on the community’s time commitment, from one to five years in the program.

“Developing downtowns is essential in building a tax base, raising property values and putting people to work,” MEDC CEO Steve Arwood said. “Programs like Michigan Main Street provide downtown communities with the tools needed to create jobs, provide desirable places to live and build a sense of place for Michigan residents.”

Though its end goal is economic growth, the Michigan Main Street program emphasizes a “sense of place” for community development. It is based on the theory that what attracts people to communities is a sense of identity. For instance, if the city has something to show, people will come to city centers and downtowns and add to their diversity and strength.
