The FDA announced a proposal to ban most powdered gloves in the United States due to risk of various adverse events, including respiratory allergic reactions, airway or wound inflammation, and post-surgical adhesions.

The Agency has determined that these risks cannot be corrected through new or updated labeling, and the proposed ban, if finalized, would remove these products from the marketplace completely.

The proposed ban applies to powdered surgeon’s gloves, powdered patient examination gloves and absorbable powder for lubricating a surgeon’s glove.

The proposed rule is available online for public comment for 90 days.
