The Michigan Bio-Industry Strategic Roadmap 2015, a statewide effort to develop priorities, actions, accountable stakeholders, and performance measures that will direct the growth of Michigan’s biosciences industry, is poised to enter a data gathering phase.

An Executive Steering Committee comprised of Michigan bioscience leaders working in concert with Project Manager, Michael Kruczek of the Data Consulting Group and MichBio, compiled a list of >100 thought leaders for potential outreach. Targeted individuals will participate either in 1:1 interviews or work/focus group meetings; an online survey will be available too.

Thought leaders were categorized by sector (medical devices, biotech/pharma, ag-bio, R&D/testing/medical laboratories, informatics/health IT, and bioscience distribution/logistics), market areas (clinical trials, contract research organizations, manufacturing suppliers and bioscience support services), and functional areas (capital access, innovation, business climate, education/talent and industry growth). Each group will respond to both general questions and those most relevant to their respective expertise category.

Once gathered, the information will be integrated with a preliminary set of recommendations developed by the Steering Committee. The draft priorities were captured from several recent Michigan-based reports and action plans, as well as incorporating best practices from other select states.

Anyone interested in participating as a thought leader or who has questions about the Roadmap process should get in touch with MichBio at A general notice will be sent out for the online survey when it becomes available next week.

MichBio thanks its partners, Business Leaders for Michigan and the University Research Corridor for their support, engagement and leadership towards executing the Michigan Bio-Industry Strategic Roadmap 2015 initiative.

This is an extraordinary opportunity for MichBio to help lead our Nation by addressing the needs behind and opportunities afforded by: 1. The 21st Century Cures Act 2. President Obama’s Precision Medicine Initiative 3. The BRAIN Initiative 4. The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute 5. Big data It is a stubborn fact that the number of new drug approvals per billion inflation-adjusted U.S. dollars halved every nine years from 1950 to 2010 despite scientific breakthroughs such as decoding genomes and previous changes in regulation such as Prescription Drug User Fee Act ( Success in reversing this long-term trend depends upon recognizing its scientific and technical root causes. Then Michigan firms and institutions can come together to capitalize, both healthwise and monetarily, on opportunities such as those identified above. Doing so will accelerate prevention, cures, personalized medicine, and productivity. We can do this.
