Michelle Tarver, MD, PhD
Director - Center for Devices and Radiological Health
U.S. Food & Drug Administration
Dr. Michelle Tarver is Director of the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH), where she leads the Center's efforts to advance public health through innovative, safe, and effective medical devices. A board-certified ophthalmologist with a PhD in epidemiology, she has more than 15 years of experience at the FDA, holding leadership roles spanning medical device regulations, strategic innovation, patient engagement, and evidence generation.
Throughout her career, Dr. Tarver has led initiatives to strengthen collaboration across the healthcare ecosystem, elevate the patient perspective in regulatory decision-making, and advance innovative approaches to medical device evaluation. She has extensive experience in clinical research, regulatory policy, and premarket and postmarket review.
Dr. Tarver earned a B.S. in Biochemistry from Spelman College and completed the M.D./Ph.D. program at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Bloomberg School of Public Health. She continues to practice as a clinician caring for patients with inflammatory eye conditions.
