The Startup Angels Workshop is scheduled for Oct. 4-5 in Detroit, hosted by Washington, D.C.-based Startup Angels Inc. and Techstars Mobility. Attendees, whether novice or experienced investors, can learn about best practices for investing in tech startups, portfolio diversification, investment managing, curated deal flow and other topics in four sessions. Guests will have a chance to network with other investors and prescreened startup ventures, according to a news release.

"Through our work, we've learned there's demand for information about startup investing across the U.S. and around the globe," Startup Angels founder and CEO Leslie Jump said in a statement. "In response, we created the Startup Angels Workshop to support the specific challenges and opportunities that different communities have when it comes to inspiring and educating local investors. We're looking forward to being the catalyst for more startup investors in the Detroit metropolitan region — a natural community for more angel investors due to its strong startup roots and phenomenal industrial expertise."

Workshop speakers include:

  • Matt Bower, partner, Grand Rapids-based Varnum LLP
  • Patti Glaza, vice president and managing director, Detroit-based Invest Detroit
  • Leslie Jump, CEO and founder, Startup Angels Inc.
  • Sherwin Prior, managing director, Detroit-based General Motors Ventures LLC
  • Paul Riser, managing director, TechTown Detroit
  • Ted Serbinski, managing director, Techstars Mobility
  • Chris Thomas, founder and partner, Detroit-based Fontinalis Partners LLC

The first day of the workshop will take place at Varnum Law LLP's downtown Detroit office then at Techstars Mobility's offices at Ford Field the second day. The workshop will precede Techstars' third annual Demo Day on Oct. 18 for its 2017 startup class, the release said.
