BioArbor, an entirely volunteer run organization, hosts educational networking events for the life sciences industry in the greater Ann Arbor area. BioArbor events explore technology commercialization (product, device, and service), financing strategies, business development, regulatory affairs, marketing, and other topics useful to life science entrepreneurs.

'What I Would Have Done Differently'

The CEO job in a startup is simultaneously the best and worst job you can have. Many times, the CEO is a (co)founder with little management experience and besides, nobody makes the right decisions every time. Other times, the CEO has led a start-up one or more times. Yet, no matter what the case, the entrepreneurial and commercialization journey is fraught with opportunities and unanticipated challenges. We’ll get up close and personal with three CEOs who’ll share their retrospective thoughts on what went well, what went wrong, and strategies to be thinking about as a company grows.





Ian Charles, PhD

President, Boleyn Advisory Group, Inc.


After earning his Ph.D., Ian spent twelve years in the auto industry before getting involved in the world of start-ups and small to mid-market enterprises when he formed the Boleyn Advisory Group in 2005.


As well as providing technical and business consulting services under this umbrella, Ian has co-founded several start-ups. Aside from the numerous ‘six months to abject failure’ attempts, Ian has been successful twice: in 2015, Ian exited from Ventower Industries, a wind tower manufacturer based in Monroe, MI and he currently acts as Chairman, CFO and the only guy who actually puts his tools away for an organic waste treatment company, Digested Organics.


When he isn’t turning noxious substances into drinking water, Ian enjoys cycling, martial arts and giving his children money.




Michael Teicher

CEO, EhmetDx


Michael Teicher, responsible for the overall business management and execution of the business plan is the Chief Executive Officer and strategist for EhmetDx. Mr. Teicher brings over 15 years of experience and resources for financial backing and strategic advocacy to companies within the healthcare sector. Prior to founding EhmetDx, Mr. Teicher previously advised senior executives of medical companies and investors on strategy, operations, and capital market exposure. In his seat as Chief Executive Officer of Xoran Technologies, he redirected the company out of the path of bankruptcy and extreme FDA scrutiny to a now market leader in point of care CT. Most recently, Michael has led his team in completing a complex CBCT system at the McLaren Proton Therapy Center. He is currently working on the global commercialization of both the most cost-effective and efficacious self-shielded radiation therapy device dedicated to the treatment of breast cancer. He is a father of 3, an active coach in youth sports, and a volunteer for a number of local homeless assistance programs.




Kevin Wittrup

Venture Partner, RSVP Ventures & Capital


As an early stage entrepreneur and venture partner at RSVP Capital, Kevin has been a key operator in several early stage and technology commercialization ventures, most recently BIOVIGIL Hygiene Technologies. As the co-founder and CEO of BIOVIGIL from 2011-2017, Kevin led the effort to commercialize a sophisticated healthcare technology product, establish multiple strategic channel partnerships and GPO contracts, implement the system at over 20 hospital locations (including 3 international trials), and build the company from 0 to 23 employees.
