NSF International, an independent, not-for-profit organization committed to protecting and improving public health, recently hosted a meeting with Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Commissioner Robert Adler. During the visit, CPSC Commissioner Robert Adler and staff toured NSF International’s laboratories and discussed testing and certification for a range of consumer products.

Girls eating a high-fat diet during puberty, even those who do not become overweight or obese, may be at a greater risk of developing breast cancer later in life, according to Michigan State University researchers.

The implications - that a high-fat diet may have detrimental effects independent of its effect to cause obesity - could drive new cancer prevention efforts.

Compendia Bioscience, Inc. announced the award of $1.3 million in SBIR Fast Track funds to incorporate micro-RNA data and analyses into the Oncomine platform.

Cancer is a highly complex disease in which all of the causes and effects are not well understood. In recent years a new type of non-coding RNA molecule — micro-RNA — has been identified as an important contributor to cancer development, progression, and metastasis, creating a need for cancer researchers to easily access and query this new data type.

U-M: Vitamin A Unsafe for HIV-Positive Breastfeeding Women

Vitamin A and beta-carotene supplements are unsafe for HIV-positive women who breastfeed because they may boost the excretion of HIV in breast milk—thereby increasing the chances of transmitting the infection to the child, a pair of new studies suggest.

Epidemiologist Eduardo Villamor of the University of Michigan School of Public Health says transmission of HIV through breastfeeding happens because breast milk carries viral particles that the baby ingests. Supplementing HIV-positive women with vitamin A and beta-carotene appears to increase the amount of the virus in milk.

Beaumont Hospitals has received a $3 million gift from Max and Debra Ernst and family to name the Ernst Cardiovascular Center in Memory of Ellen Ernst. The gift will establish a dedicated facility at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak for the diagnosis, treatment and care of people with heart and vascular disease.

UM: Landmark dental school study uses genetic test to help predict gum disease

University of Michigan School of Dentistry has signed an agreement with Interleukin Genetics Inc. to conduct what may be the largest clinical study to date using genetic testing to assess the risk for gum disease.

William Giannobile, professor at U-M dentistry and director of the Michigan Center for Oral Health Research at the School of Dentistry, will lead the study for U-M.

WSU Researcher Gets $1.7M To Study Kidney Abnormality

Tej K. Mattoo, M.D., professor and chief of pediatric nephrology at Wayne State University’s School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital of Michigan, recently received more than $1.7 million from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Diabetes & Digestive & Kidney Diseases to continue the project, “Primary Vesicoureteral Reflux in Children.”

To date, NIH has funded more than$4.7 million towards this research project and a separate study on Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis, a disease that attacks the kidneys’ filtering system.
