The year keeps racing past as we near its end...unbelievable where the time has gone.

When we last left off, I was on my way to the MD&M Chicago 2014 Conference and Exhibition. There I chaired an all-day session on various topics related to "Designing Next Generation Medical Devices". Morning speakers presented on miniaturization and new power technology, as well as on protecting IP and new design. Two workshops - "Innovation that Matters: Cost & Patient Safety" and "Human Factors" - were delivered in the afternoon. Session speakers were from a cross-section of the industry - Covidien, CareFusion, Medtronic, MicroSystems Engineering, WiTricity, and others. [Read more]

Do Not End Up with an Unenforceable Patent - It's Your Hard-Earned Patent

Vara Prasad, V.N. Josyula, Ph.D.

Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP

In general, many people are aware of the value of patenting an idea or invention, filing a patent application, and getting it granted. Moreover, most applicants are aware of the costs associated with the patent prosecution process and payment of maintenance fees throughout the patent's life cycle. However, many people, even many inventors, are not aware that a patent can be unenforceable due to violation of duty of disclosure and/or inequitable conduct. It is possible (vide infra) that one could end up with an unenforceable patent by not following the simple rules and laws related to the intellectual property. [Read More]

Device Tax Survey from MDMA

MDMA is conducting a short and anonymous survey to gauge how the industry is addressing the 2.3% medical device tax, and how repeal of this policy would allow companies to invest in innovation.

Responses are due Friday, December 5, 2014. This brief survey consists of 10 short questions.

Funding Announcement
Pediatric Device Commercialization Gap Funding

The Michigan Pediatric Device Consortium (M-PED) is pleased to announce its Request for Applications for gap funding for pediatric medical devices, including apps. M-PED is seeking proposals from inventors in medical institutions, private practices, the business community, and academic research who have medical device concepts for use with pediatric patients. Proposals should address an unmet need within the pediatric population with a device idea that lends itself to commercialization. Awards of $20-50,000 may be granted to each of 3-6 projects. Projects that are past the prototype stage are encouraged to apply.

The application process has two stages. A 2-page written pre-proposal is due on December 8th, 2014.  Selected applicants will be invited by December 23rd to submit a full 6-8 page proposal due on Friday, January 9th, 2015. Awards will be announced after January 20th, 2015.
