Vince Groppi, PhD

Director, Center for Discovery of New Medicines, and Director, Center for Chemical Genomics at the University of Michigan (U-M).

Dr. Groppi holds a Ph.D. from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and was a postdoc and assistant professor at the University of California, San Francisco. He currently serves as a standing member of two NIH translational study sections. Dr. Groppi teaches translational pharmacology at U-M and serves on advisory board of U-M’s Protein Folding Disease Initiative. Dr. Groppi is also on the scientific advisory board of Cure Alzheimer’s Fund and Hanna’s Hope. Dr. Groppi cofounded Oricula Therapeutics, which is developing a novel therapy for treating hearing loss.

Dr. Groppi's broad expertise includes all stages of drug discovery from early target ID and validation, through assay development, knowledge-based and broad screening strategies, and driving lead optimization.  Dr. Groppi is particularly skilled in translational assays of drug efficacy including defining PK/PD relations and identifying translational biomarkers for preclinical and clinical decision-making.  Early in his career, Dr. Groppi co-invented an instrument for cell-based drug screening and mechanistic assays called Fluorescent Imaging Plate Reader, or FLIPR, which has become an important technology in high-throughput screening and lead optimization.

Most recently, Dr. Groppi was the vice president and chief scientific officer of Essen BioScience, an integrated bioscience company that developed cell-based technologies to solve therapeutically important problems in cancer and neuroscience. Previously he held positions at Upjohn, Pharmacia and Pfizer leading discovery, development and business strategy teams. During the course of his career he advanced six compounds into clinical development.
