The Research, Testing & Medical Labs sector
is unique in that its firms do not engage in manufacturing specific products.
Instead, these companies provide R&D and lab services that play a critical role
in breakthrough research and the development of new products, in addition to
administering biomedical diagnostic and lab services. When products like new
therapeutics, for example, are developed and successfully commercialized by
these biotechnology companies, they often move out of the sector by
their NAICS classification and into Pharmaceuticals &Therapeutics.

Research, Testing, and Medical Labs, with rapid job growth in recent
years, has firmly established itself as a key bioscience sector in Michigan. The
sector grew during the period of 2001-2010 by over 50 percent in new
establishments, and a 20 percent increase from 2007-2010. Establishments in the Research, Testing &
Medical Labs sector tend to be the smallest in the biosciences, in terms of
employment, averaging about 21 employees per site compared with an
industry‐wide average of 30 employees per establishment. The sector employed 9,800
in Michigan according to the 2012 Battelle/BIO State Bioscience Industry
Development Report1, with a total employment impact of over 29,000.
