LANSING, MI -- Michigan has named five university scientists and one federal government toxicologist to a science review panel that will recommend possible regulatory measures for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances called PFAS or PFCs.

Two members of the PFAS Scientific Advisory Committee are researchers at Michigan State University and another is a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency scientist whose work was heavily cited in development of federal PFAS health guidelines.

Another worked on the C8 Study in West Virginia.

The state announced the names on Thursday, March 18.

Jennifer Field of Oregon State University
Scott Bartell of the University of California, Irvine
Christopher Lau of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Susan Masten of Michigan State University
Dan Jones of Michigan State University
David Savitz of Brown University will chair the panel.

The panelists were selected based on their expertise in the areas of epidemiology, toxicology, water quality, biochemistry and molecular biology, the state said.

"The science surrounding potential health effects from these contaminants is evolving rapidly, and we need to ensure we're taking action based on the latest possible discoveries and scientific reviews," said Carol Isaacs, director of the Michigan PFAS team (MPART).

All panelist are volunteers, according to the state news release. They will "focus on all chemicals in the PFAS family."

"They have agreed to objectively assess the scientific information surrounding the issue of health advisory levels, health outcomes, remediation and mitigation, and environmental pathways."
