Company provides plumbing and building product certification in the United Kingdom and beyond

ANN ARBOR, Mich., USA and GWENT, UK – BuildCert, Ltd., a provider of mechanical and materials certification services for the plumbing and building industries, recently changed its name to NSF International. The name change reflects BuildCert’s alignment with the public health organisation’s global water services. NSF International has owned and operated BuildCert since 1998.

BuildCert customers can expand their markets utilising NSF International’s wide range of certification services for the plumbing and building product industries, which include standards in the United Kingdom, Europe and North America.

“NSF International is a leader in global certification solutions for the building and plumbing industries,” said Tarik Bellahcene, NSF International Managing Director for Europe, Middle East and Africa. “This name change will expand the international recognition of products certified by the BuildCert team. While the BuildCert mark was well known in the UK, the NSF International mark has greater recognition across the globe.”

Formed in the late 1990s due to industry demand for high quality, unbiased product certification and approval services, the BuildCert team has gained the respect of the industry by providing efficient and cost-effective certification services that are accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).

“Changing the name of BuildCert, Ltd. to NSF International demonstrates the alignment of our expertise and competencies to better serve and support the building and plumbing industries in the UK and beyond,” said Paul Taylor, UK Certification Director, NSF International. “The NSF International name clearly communicates a strong and well respected brand that demonstrates product compliance and quality solutions.”

NSF International will continue to support the BuildCert mark during a transition phase. Effective 1st August, 2017 new clients may use the NSF International marks on certified products or literature. During the transition period, current clients can continue using the BuildCert mark until their inventory has been depleted. After 31st July, 2018, all clients will be expected to use the NSF International mark, with one exception: the CIAS certification mark will transition on a slightly modified timeline.

NSF International has produced an NSF BuildCert mark transition chart to show how the marks should be used during the transition period.

As NSF International, the BuildCert team continues to offer the same core services, including certification to these schemes:

  • Thermostatic Mixing Valve Scheme TMV2 certifies that products comply with the requirements of the European standards EN 1111 and EN 1287
  • Thermostatic Mixing Valve Scheme TMV3 certifies that products comply with the requirements of the performance standard detailed in the UK Department of Health’s HTM 04-01: Supplement Performance Specification D 08. Products tested and approved against this scheme are often used in high-risk areas of healthcare facilities.
  • Chemical Inhibitor Approval Scheme (CIAS) certifies products for use in domestic hot water central heating systems as required by the compliance guide referred to in Part L of the Building Regulations
  • Distribution Tempering Control (DTC) Scheme certifies that products comply with the requirements of the European standard EN 15092 as required by Part G of the UK Building Regulations
  • Water Industry Specification 4-02-01 certifies the operational requirements for in situ resin lining of water mains

In addition, NSF International’s water services include certification of products that come into contact with drinking water, such as plumbing components, water treatment chemicals and drinking water filters, as well as pool and spa equipment and chemicals.

About NSF International

NSF International ( is a global independent organisation that writes standards, and tests and certifies products for the water, food, health sciences and consumer goods industries to minimise adverse health effects and protect the environment. Founded in 1944, NSF is committed to protecting human health and safety worldwide. Operating in more than 170 countries, NSF International is a Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre on Food Safety, Water Quality and Indoor Environment.

NSF International’s water services include certification of products that come into contact with drinking water, such as plumbing components, water treatment chemicals and drinking water filters, as well as pool and spa equipment and chemicals. NSF led the development of the American National Standards for all materials and products that treat or come in contact with drinking water to help protect public health and the environment and minimise adverse health effects. In 1990, the U.S. EPA replaced its own drinking water product advisory program with these NSF standards. Today, most plumbing codes require certification to NSF standards for pipes and plumbing components in commercial and residential buildings.

NSF’s global water services include testing, certification and auditing for municipal water treatment components and chemicals, plastic piping systems, plumbing fixtures and fittings, point-of-use and point-of-entry water systems and filters.
