MPI Research Announces $5 Million Upgrade, 130 New Jobs; CEO to Retire

MATTAWAN, MI -- Drug and compound testing company MPI Research plans to spend $5 million to upgrade facilities at its Mattawan headquarters and add up to 130 jobs by the end of this year.

Separately, company founder William U. Parfet, 69, has announced his retirement, stating in a Jan. 27 letter to company customer and suppliers that MPI has a bright future and is poised to become the world's fourth largest preclinical contract research company.

Parfet retires as chairman, president and chief executive officer of the company he founded about 20 years ago after buying and rebuilding the contract research business of what was International Research and Development Corp.

After the economic recession of 2008 and several years during which its leaders said the flow of work was much slower from the pharmaceutical makers and research organizations that are its customers, MPI says things have improved.
