As a result of the tireless efforts of MichBio members, other state associations and their member companies, and the national industry groups including AdvaMed, MDMA, and MITA, Congress took another important step towards repealing the ill-conceived medical device tax today.
In a historic bipartisan vote, the House voted 280-140 to repeal the tax. 46 Democratic Members voted in support of repeal, greatly outpacing the last vote in 2012 where 37 Democratic Members voted.
Much of the debate during markup and the House floor centered about "industry agreeing" to the $20B tax. Regrettably, Congressional Democrats from Michigan propagated this misconception, in voting against repeal.
MichBio is most grateful to all of you who took time to send emails, make calls, etc. All of this made a BIG difference! Our efforts now shift to the Senate, where we will continue to rely on your passionate outreach. MichBio has been at the forefront along with its national partners consistent as a voice against the tax since it was first proposed, and we will continue to lead until the tax is repealed.
Thank you again for all your efforts on this and other issues that impact our industry. Together, we are improving Michigan’s medical device sector and patient care.
