The five Institutional Review Boards of the University of Michigan Academic Research/Education (University, 4Yr College, Institute) (IRBMED) are charged with the oversight of human subjects research conducted by Academic Research/Education (University, 4Yr College, Institute) faculty, students, and staff at any University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) facility or site. The purpose of an IRB is to protect the rights and welfare of human subjects in research. Guiding this process is the application of federal and state laws, university policies, ethical principles; particularly those articulated in the Belmont Report.
