U-M-Study: Immune Cells Predict Success of Head and Neck Cancer Treatment

Levels of a key type of immune cell are higher in head and neck cancer patients whose tumors are linked to the human papillomavirus, or HPV, according to researchers at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The finding suggests a way to predict which tumors are most likely to respond to chemotherapy and radiation and allow doctors to choose the best treatment option up front.

Karmanos Researchers Study Novel Folate Transporter to Customize Chemotherapy

Scientists at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit presented a poster at the American Association for Cancer Research’s 101st Annual Meeting 2010 that details their novel study of molecules that use a tumor’s acidic microenvironment to help them tailor chemotherapeutic agents to kill the tumor.

U-M: Pressure-Cooking Algae Into Better Biofuel

Heating and squishing microalgae in a pressure-cooker can fast-forward the crude-oil-making process from millennia to minutes.

University of Michigan professors are working to understand and improve this procedure in an effort to speed up development of affordable biofuels that could replace fossil fuels and power today's engines.

They are also examining the possibility of other new fuel sources such as E. coli bacteria that would feed on waste products from previous bio-oil batches.

U-M: Microfluidic Integrated Circuit Could Help Enable Home Diagnostic Tests

As a way to simplify lab-on-a-chip devices that could offer quicker, cheaper and more portable medical tests, University of Michigan researchers have created microfluidic integrated circuits.

Just as electronic circuits intelligently route the flow of electricity on computer chips without external controls, these microfluidic circuits regulate the flow of fluid through their devices without instructions from outside systems.

A paper on the technology is newly published online in Nature Physics.
