Beaumont First in MI to Treat Atrial Fibrillation with New Laser Device
Cardiologists at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak were the first in Michigan to use a new investigational laser device that may improve long-term effectiveness of ablation, a procedure for treating a common heart rhythm condition called atrial fibrillation.
Beaumont researchers are part of a national, Food and Drug Administration-approved trial studying the safety and effectiveness of the CardioFocus cardiac laser ablation device. The balloon catheter uses a rotating laser to burn heart tissue.
UM Study: Brain's computer has separate keyboard to control powerful emotions
Controlling powerful emotional reactions is often difficult because the brain's computer has a separate "keyboard" that controls feelings within extreme emotions like desire and dread, according to University of Michigan psychologists.
A new study by U-M researchers Kent Berridge, Jocelyn Richard and Alexis Faure (now at the University of Paris-Sud in France) found that a "surprising limitation of top-down signals to penetrate emotion may restrict the voluntary efforts by people to effectively regulate their emotions."
Tolera Therapeutics Wins Orphan Drug Designation
Tolera Therapeutics, Inc., was granted orphan drug status by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for TOL101 (anti-TCR murine monoclonal antibody, type IgM), for treatment of recent onset immune-mediated Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Designation is granted for treatment of patients sixteen years of age and younger with immune-mediated T1DM and preserved pancreatic β-cell function, commonly referred to as juvenile diabetes.

Henry Ford Hospital Appoints New President and CEO
John Popovich Jr., M.D., a nationally respected pulmonary disease and internal medicine specialist, as well as a national leader in health care policy, has been appointed president and chief executive officer of Henry Ford Hospital.
Dr. Popovich, 60, who started at Henry Ford Hospital in 1975 as a medical intern, will oversee the entire clinical and financial operations of the 802-bed hospital, the medical, educational and research flagship of Henry Ford Health System.
He will assume his new position July 15, 2010.

Adeona Pharmaceuticals, Inc., (AMEX:AEN – News) announced that its wholly-owned CLIA-certified clinical testing subsidiary, HartLab, has expanded its in-house diagnostic testing services to include a full array of microbiology testing.
